Project Overview
The GeoChem building is a five-story, 40,000 sqft building that houses the Department of Earth, Environment, Planetary Sciences, and Chemistry. The project upgraded the mechanical infrastructure, which included demo and replacement of two existing air handler units, a roof cooling tower, chiller, and multiple pumps and supporting piping. The building remained occupied, and lab experiments were underway during the equipment installation. Therefore temporary heating and cooling were provided as the new systems were built, tested, and installed.
The mechanical scope included replacing (2) AHU’s, a chiller, pumps and upgrading all equipment to direct digital controls. Existing laboratories were modernized, and new laboratory fume hoods and fan coil units were installed. Our BIM capabilities enabled us to scan the existing space and install equipment without issue.
The fire protection scope was a retrofit for a completely new wet sprinkler system. A stand-pipe on each side of the building was installed and connected for piping to classrooms, labs, and hallways. Some of the clean labs required special materials to minimize dust build-up for clean lab areas.
